We’re approaching that time of year when romance is most definitely in the air and lovers around the world celebrate their feelings with a card and more often than not a chocolatey treat for their beloved.
So, as you’ve no doubt come to expect from us, the team here at White Rabbit have been getting quite excited about the many possibilities of this latest special occasion.

Aphrodisiac qualities
St Valentine’s Day has grown in popularity since around the middle of the 18th century, when people began sending hand-made cards and sweets to the object of their affection, and now it is the second-largest seasonal card-sending time of the year and is immediately associated with love and ardour. Chocolate has become the go-to gift for romancing your loved one, and there’s good reason why this delicious substance is so closely linked with affairs of the heart.

Chocolate is a complex material containing many compounds that have a marked effect on the brain and body, and it has been considered an aphrodisiac for centuries. We now know this is because it contains the PEA chemical, which stimulates the central nervous system and causes the release of endorphins, resulting in a feeling of pleasure and even euphoria. It increases the brain’s levels of feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine, which can increase desire, excitation and responsiveness. Dark chocolate is one of the richest sources of PEA, so we’ll leave its potential as a ‘food of love’ to your imagination…

Celebrate with White Rabbit
Choosing a suitable sweet gift for your amour can be a minefield at this time of year as shelves in pretty much every shop you set foot in are adorned with heart-shaped boxes, tins and tubs of red and pink Valentine-themed chocolate-flavoured goodies. What you can be assured of at White Rabbit now, as at any time of year, is that our products are always created using premium quality, ethically-sourced ingredients that are guaranteed to deliver an exquisite experience for your tastebuds (and a PEA boost for your brain too!).

Naturally, we can’t let February 14th pass us by without an appropriate amount of hearts-and-flowers fuss and delicate chocolatey loveliness, so we have devised a few special events that we hope our customers will enjoy:

Valentine’s meal for couples

Here’s an exclusive opportunity to enjoy what might just be the most romantic meal available in East Yorkshire on St Valentine’s Day itself! Our café will be transformed into an intimate evening restaurant for a limited number of couples who can look forward to three courses of sweet and savoury dishes, all featuring – of course! – chocolate. Matching wines will be provided by local wine merchant House of Townend. Book early to avoid disappointment, £22 per person. For an additional £10pp diners can enjoy alcoholic drinks with their meal and there’s also an option to include a special gift to take away for a further £5pp.

Examples of what might feature on the menu include a seafood starter with chocolate vinaigrette; Mexican mole sauce (made using dark chocolate) with homemade corn tortillas, and ‘smash cake’ in salted caramel featuring chocolate brownie and chocolate mousse with honeycomb and caramel hearts.

Using chocolate in cooking in unexpected ways is something we are constantly exploring and we are eager to plan more dining evenings at our Dyer Lane venue, so watch this space for more announcements soon!

Saturday, February 17
Couples’ chocolate-making

What could be more romantic than rolling up your sleeves and getting to work alongside your beloved to produce your very own chocolate treat? Book a place on our couples’ chocolate-making workshop which runs from 2.30pm to 4pm, for £50 per couple.
And even if you’re not in a couple at the moment, all of these would make lovely treats to enjoy with a good friend, your mum, or someone else you want to show your affection for. We’ll make sure everyone has an enjoyable, fun time!

We know that not everyone will fall madly in love after one bite of a good truffle but whether you are already in a state of joyful union or will be spending February 14 as a singleton, we are certain you will find something to enhance your endorphins in our café and shop, so drop in and pay us a visit.

If you have any chocolate related questions, why not pop into our shop at 14-16 Dyer Lane in Beverley, where we’ll be happy to guide you and offer you a sample. Email us or call (01482) 679325.
